Setting The Standard in end-of-life care: Red Deer Hospice Honoured

Red Deer Hospice is proud to announce it has been awarded Accredited with Exemplary Standing, the highest designation granted by Accreditation Canada. The achievement reflects the Hospice’s ongoing commitment to providing compassionate, people-centered end-of-life care for residents and their loved ones.

The accreditation process includes a comprehensive on-site review of approximately 600 criteria, examining clinical care, safety, leadership, and organizational practices. Surveyors observe care in action, review policies, and speak directly with staff, residents, families, and community partners to understand how care is experienced every day.

Red Deer Hospice Executive Director Jackie Van Langen says the designation reflects both how care is delivered and the heart behind it.

“Pursuing accreditation wasn’t just about meeting requirements — it was a thoughtful step aligned with our vision to lead in providing excellent, creative, and holistic hospice care. Achieving Exemplary Standing confirms that the way we care for residents and families is not only compassionate, but also guided by the highest national standards. This recognition belongs to our entire community — staff, volunteers, physicians, and partners — and strengthens our foundation as we continue supporting Central Alberta families.”

One example of meaningful change emerging from this journey is the creation of the Red Deer Hospice Family Council, a group of former resident family members who now partner with the Hospice to help shape the future of care. During renovations to the Hospice’s spa and self-care area, Council members were invited to share their perspectives. “They asked whether we planned to include a towel warmer,” Van Langen explains. “It was a simple suggestion, but one that will make a real difference in comfort. That’s the essence of person-centered care — listening, learning, and responding.”

Red Deer Hospice will continue building on this momentum through its strategic priorities, including enhancing resident experience, expanding community awareness, and ensuring long-term sustainability to meet the growing palliative care needs in the region.
