Clinical Educator/Registered Nurse

Part Time

This position will remain open until June 17, 2022.


The Clinical Educator is responsible for clinical educational programs, clinical mentorship, providing direction and guidance to nursing staff in the absence of the Care Manager. This is a dynamic position requiring an RN background, with a strong clinical /palliative knowledge base and related leadership experience.

Reports to: Care Manager

Guidance, direction and education to:

  • Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs)
  • Health Care Aides (HCAs)

Liaises with:

  • Bereavement Staff
  • Administrative Staff
  • Facility Coordinator

External Stakeholders include:

  • Residents and Resident Families
  • AHS Home Care Nurses /Case Managers
  • AHS Palliative Care Resource Nurses
  • Physicians
  • Pharmacists /Pharmacies
  • Schools of Nursing

Key Responsibility Areas

Educational Programs

  • Plan, coordinate and deliver a full suite of clinical educational programs as required in the house, using classroom-based, distance-learning, and on-the-job training techniques
  • Utilizing the principles of Adult Education, acquire, design and/or facilitate workshops and courses based upon assessed staff/learner needs (Continuing Care Health Service Standards (CCHSS) , CPR, Back Care, Safety Training, End of Life Care, scopes of practice, RDH policies, incident reporting and infection prevention and control.)
  • Coordinate content-specific training with outside service providers, to deliver end of life courses and other training that may be required.
  • Plan and implement a formal onboarding/orientation program for clinical staff in collaboration with the Care Manager.
  • Organize annual education planning and delivery
  • Liaises with Human Resources (HR) to make sure all Education is tracked to each employee. (This is critical to meet the CCHSS requirements.)
  • Dietary, provide education and support to dietary staff in the planning and preparation of end-of-life appropriate meals.

Emergency Preparedness & Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) Program

  • Oversee, Educate, and keep current the Emergency Response Plan and the Pandemic Plan
  • Ensure all mandatory standards, training/education for Continuing Care


  • Be a champion in ensuring that Red Deer Hospice delivers on our mission and vision.
  • Demonstrate Red Deer Hospice values and principles in action.
  • Assist with leadership and guidance of the nursing care team (LPNs and HCAs and students or undergraduate nurses)
  • Support and guide care team in regards to scope of practice
  • Review nursing documentation and charting for proper checks and balances and adherence to nursing and quality standards
  • Provide feedback to the Care Manager regarding performance improvement planning and reviews for employees
  • Communicate nursing and hospice information and instructions using various communication strategies to nursing staff.
  • As required, provide assistance and back up to the Care Manager in all clinical related responsibilities. May also, at times, be expected to practice.

Administrative Responsibilities /Medical Coordination

  • On occasion, participate in resident care conferences including providing relevant information to resident /family related to treatments, procedures, and resident self-care requirements
  • Ensure all nursing practice is consistent with relevant Acts and Regulations, Codes of Ethics, Standards of Practice, and approved competencies of the CLPNA, AHS Continuing Care standards and HCA Alberta Competencies
  • Participate in various AHS meetings/committees and RDH nursing staff meetings and or committees. (Example Accreditation)
  • Provide various reports as required to Care Manager or Executive Director
  • Participate and guide the development or revision and implementation nursing policies and procedures; using evidence based best practice
  • Maintain nursing competence by working the occasional LPN or HCA shift
  • Participate actively in Accreditation and various care audits as required


  • Minimum of a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing or Bachelor of Nursing
  • Certification in Adult Education (CACE or equivalent) preferred
  • Additional training or coursework in Leadership or Supervision preferred
  • Experience teaching in a post secondary institution or health facility


  • Current CRNA License
  • Current CPR Certification
  • CHPCN (C) Certification preferred
  • LEAP Palliative Care Course
